The EICAR test file is the
result of a cooperative effort between Authentium and
other leading antivirus researchers. EICAR is not
vendor-specific and is available for use free of charge.
The EICAR test file was designed to provide an answer to
these questions:
1. Is my antivirus program working?
2. What happens when my antivirus program finds a virus?
3. Which messages are displayed?
The concept behind EICAR is that antivirus programs
should detect the file exactly like they detect viruses,
and treat it as one - for example as a 78-byte
overwriting virus (when disinfecting). This purpose
could be served by a custom test file for each program,
but this may simplify the testing process, in particular
when multiple products are being tested and evaluated.
